News of the World closes down

Update: This was even bigger than predicted. Rupert Murdoch's company has closed the paper after 168 years, rather than firing the editor. 200 jobs gone.

Original post: This is probably the biggest media scandal of all time. Inconceivable, but the News of the World has been hacking a wide range of people’s cellphones to obtain details and background for stories.

Personal information of the families of soldiers killed in action in Iraq and Afghanistan were found in the files of a private detective working for a tabloid newspaper.

The list of phones hacked included murder victims, terror victims, film stars, sports figures, politicians and the royal family's entourage.

The News of the World’s detective, Glenn Mulcaire, above, had 11 000 pages of notes in his possession.
